It's a lot of work, but the four of you don't mind. The potential uses for this thing far outweigh the arduous process.
It's a lot of measuring spells, written spells, a lot of schlepping around the castle and measuring every bloody inch of hallway there is to be had. But the Marauders enjoy it; all the secret passageways you stumble across are more than worth the effort.
At first the lot of you had intended to use it as a general map of the castle, for planning pranks and whatnot. But then Remus came across a spell that plotted the feet of the inhabitants of the castle within the map, as well as their movements, and everything changed.
It's a lot of work, but it's one of the finest bits of magic Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs have ever created: the Marauder's Map.
