Signeu: Learning of Remus' lycanthropy Gained: Day 140, Nyssa
You are twelve and wondering how he expected to keep this from you for the rest of your school years. You and two of your other bunkmates are gathered around his four-post bed, trying to drum up the courage to pull back the curtain.
The three of you had been onto him for months, but last night confirmed it: the full moon. His monthly absences from classes. How nervous and agitated he became in the days leading up to them. How weak he became when he returned.
You had joked, in the beginning, that perhaps he was a girl in disguise and Madame Pomfrey simply hid him away during 'that time' so as not to give himself away, but as time passed and evidence made it clearer, the more foolish you felt for having a laugh about it. Girls didn't hiss and act as though they'd been burned if they accidentally touched the silver dishes in the Great Hall.
The smaller, rounder of you three, Pettigrew, is trembling beside you; he's having a much harder time reconciling the friend you've sat through Binns' lectures and partnered up with for Potions projects with, with the terrible creature you've all accepted he becomes during the full moon:
Remus Lupin is a werewolf.
Finally, the friend flanking you on the other side, Potter, nods, and together you pull back the curtain.
You're met with a look in soft, amber eyes that you don't recognize until much later as fear. Remus, the soft-spoken, studious boy who loves trouble as much as the three of you, is all but cowering under the covers, as though he was expecting this. Expecting further harm, in addition to the fresh scar on his cheek.
"I-it's smart of you lot to come after me now, but I could always agree to leave you alone and save you the trouble, yes?" Terrified. Your good mate is terrified, trying to bargain with his own friends.
You and your friends look between each other, baffled. What in Merlin's...?
"We didn't come here to give you a hiding, Remus," you say softly, the words leaving you before you're really thinking of them. Pettigrew is still shaking.
"We wanted to hear the truth from you," Potter says, his hands tightening into fists from the nerves.
"I... imagine you've sorted it out yourself, though. Why bother?"
"Dammit, Remus, because you're our friend! Because you should be able to trust us with things like this!" you snap, stomping your foot lightly.
Remus falters a little, glancing away. Pettigrew speaks up softly.
"Is it true, though? Th-that's all we wanted to know..." the poor sod is completely terrified, as if this isn't a friend that they've ate and slept and studied with for over a year and instead some murderous criminal.
After a long, quiet moment, Remus nods. "Yes. I'm... a werewolf." It takes him great effort to say it.
After another long, quiet moment, Potter claps his hands once and backs away. "Now then!" He crows. "Now that that's settled, I think we're late for dinner, lads."
Remus is completely mystified, in the midst of the melting tension. "What?"
You and Potter are grinning a little. "You really think we care if you're a werewolf? You're our best mate, Lupin. We don't."
